Searching for Irrawaddy dolphins, near Kratie on the Mekong River in Cambodia.
We didn’t have to wait long, saw so many! With the sunset over the river, it was a beautiful experience all around.
But we also saw some backpackers giving the young woman manning the ticket booth a really hard time about the price. Very sad. I understand it’s pretty much impossible to trust where that money is going, in Cambodia, but regardless - it could help protect those animals to some extent. Even if it’s just because tourists are providing a cash stream for an individual who then finds it difficult to give up.
Not to mention, it is not exorbitantly priced for what you get — currently at $9 each for foreigners, $7 for 3 or more. You get your own boat and at least an hour on the river, during which you are taken around to the dolphin hot-spots by a knowledgeable driver. Ours seemed to sense exactly where we’d get lucky.

It’s our last weekend in our first apartment together. Except we’re not there to enjoy it, we’re in Siem Reap for the half marathon that’s happening tomorrow morning.
Anyway, I just realized I won’t be seeing the sunset in Phnom Penh from this angle anymore. But we will now have mango, coconut, mandarin, avocado and other tropical fruit trees. And a pond with fish!
New home pictures coming soon, now I’m off to lounge by a pool while the boyfriend carbo-loads.

Last weekend we took the ferry behind the big Nagaworld complex in Phnom Penh, over to the other side of the Mekong river. Then Hugo ran 10 km with the Phnom Penh Hash House Harriers, while I walked through the countryside, waving to bewildered kids and fending off large insects. It was a good way to get out of the city, and see a completely untouristed part of the country.
As an added bonus, about an hour or so in, a nice older lady harvesting rice popped up about two feet from me in some particularly dense foliage, scared the snot out of me with her scythe, and grabbed my belly fat, exclaiming in Khmer and laughing.
Damn you, 50 cent draft beer! Anyone want to sponsor me a gym membership?

Ton Sai Beach at low tide. (Near the more famous, expensive and far less charismatic Railey Beach, Krabi, Thailand.)
This likely the best place in the world to learn to rock-climb. Also dangerous - people get stuck here and never want to leave.

I’m getting warmed up here … now that we’re settled into Hugo’s brother’s house in Brisbane for a few weeks, I’m hoping to get some posts about the past five months of travel up soon!
