Dim sum birthday brunch last Sunday at the Yi SangĀ restaurantĀ in the Almond Hotel, close to the Phnom Penh riverside. Want now and again and forever.

Tasty spicy pork belly and noodles in Hong Kong.

This is my new obsession — Mangosteen. It’s so deliciously tart and juicy. You just cut open that purple layer and dig into the white flesh inside.
Luckily, it’s also sold by the basket, for cents, all over my new neighborhood.

The Cambodian kitchen uses a touch of garlic. And chili peppers.
Seriously, though, the smell coming from that much minced garlic is fantastic. I took this photo as I made my way through the kitchen, on my way back to my room at Okay Guesthouse in Phnom Penh (highly recommended).
I slept well that night, knowing that, if nothing else, I was completely safe from vampires.

Just what the doctor ordered. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Fish amok, a steamed fish curry with coconut cream, is an ubiquitous traditional Cambodian dish. The best one we’ve had so far was at the awesome Nary Kitchen in Battambang. We even (sort of) made it ourselves!
For an afternoon that consisted of checking out the completely untouristed food market in Battambang with our friendly guide Toot, Nary’s husband, and then nearly three hours of cooking in Nary’s atmospheric kitchen, we paid $8 each. That includes trying to eat all three courses we prepared, and recipe books to take home.
It’s worth a trip to Battambang by itself!

I am really enjoying Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Getting ten of these incredibly fresh, barbecued scallops with fried garlic, scallions and other spices on the beach for $1 is just one reason why.

Cambodian street food — pork buns. The brilliant pink hue is from dragon fruit.

Sorry I haven’t posted in a little while, but I’m on the beach in Thailand! I’m thus very busy reading, swimming, snorkeling, napping, hiking a bit, and developing a serious, crushing addiction for the above pictured Som Tam (Spicy Green Papaya Salad).
Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and thank you to all my new followers, and to let you all know I’ve been taking plenty of photos, and writing (on paper!) and will get caught up soon. Right now, though, I have an appointment with a very demanding hammock…

Los Caracoles restaurant, Barcelona. You walk through the kitchen to enter the dining rooms.
(Made me think of one of my favorite movies, yes, Ratatouille.)

Typical road-side fast food in Morocco. You pick your meat at the butcher counter, then hand it to the grill masters. Generally your only other option is some crappy potato chips from behind the coffee/tea bar inside, next to the hole-in-the-floor toilets.

The mystery meat was delicious!

Totally respectable Food Supply van in New York City.
