talesfromthecrypt asked: I love your blog! Just found it on the travel directory. I'm about to go on a 4-5 month trip to South America with my boyfriend and your advice for traveling with your significant other was great. Another question: PACKING. Any tips for packing for a long trip? Things you would recommend bringing that might get overlooked? Things you thought you would need but are actually useless? Let me...

Calling Dr. House! (Important PSA)
I didn’t want to mention it before, but for the past couple days I’ve been suffering from a cruel, painful, no doubt fatal medical ailment. I’ll get back to posting my favorite photos and tidbits momentarily, but first, you must be warned! It started Tuesday night, right as I was cooking up a delicious spicy eggplant pasta in Budapest. I poured a nice glass of red wine, and took...

This Bad Boy
Is older than you. Yep, this gas convection relic is the only thing standing between us and this below zero, freezing Budapest December. And it’s doing a fantastic job. Just check out those roarin’ gas flames in there. It’s ridiculously satisfying to turn the nob and hear it fire up. Not to worry, there are more deep, poignant posts where this came from. Oh, did I...

Budapest's Christmas Markets →
My first effort at a guest-blog invitation. Budapest, though cold, is great this time of year.

Please Don't Punch Me
Last night I had a fantastic swim at one of the most famous thermal baths in Europe. It was wonderful, except for one bothersome interruption. In the middle of my relaxing soak, I was suddenly compelled to try and take a photograph of the old men in one of the pools, that sit there at all times playing chess.  You know the ones — it may be one of the most recognized and most popular shots...

Fight Club
Breaking news — long term budget travel with your boyfriend results in some bickering and maybe even one or two all out battles. Remember that season of Amazing Race that was almost unwatchable because of the couple that devolved into explicit, almost violent, loathing? No, I’m not going to google it for a hyper link. I’ve got to get on with it so I can get out of the apartment...

There's a Brothel in Pompeii
And the intact murals inside are so romantic. Pompeii is a wonderful place to explore, definitely plan to spend at least one entire day there. Two, if you pack a picnic and take your time. At the least, take water and comfortable shoes. If you finish up early, you can catch a bus from there up to Mt. Vesuvius.

Bars of Budapest →
As we were walking down the street the other night, Hugo remarked that even if we were here a year, we wouldn’t come close to checking out all of the cool looking bars in Budapest. And thus, Bars of Budapest was born. Submissions very welcome!

Travel Blogging Pep Talk →
Having free wireless in the apartment in Budapest has allowed me to start researching the possibility of travel writing/blogging in earnest, and man has it been a downer. Seems like there are literally thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of fantastic travel blogs out there. The article linked in the heading here is a nice pep talk though, and a reminder of what to keep in focus. Guess...

Naples Highlight - Trattoria Nennella
This is the real deal — well worth the effort to find. It’s packed throughout lunch with locals. The menu is a xerox copy of a list of that day’s dishes, organized by first and second course, with a few sides at the end. There are no prices. It’s completely in Italian, and partially handwritten. A large man guards the front, and you soon realize that in addition to...

Palermo Highlights
Teatro Massimo, Palermo, Sicily. Since one of our neighbors in Budapest has kindly decided to unlock his wireless internet, I’m going to take advantage and try posting a few more of the highlights from this trip so far. (We continue to recoup and relax here before heading for India on January 4.) In Palermo, we caught an early evening production of the new Alice in Wonderland opera,...
